Why do I get the “Too Many Requests” (HTTP 429) message – and how do I fix it?
The “Too Many Requests” (HTTP 429) message appears when our system detects unusually high access activity from your side in a short period of time. This can also happen unintentionally – for example, through programs that automatically request links (Excel, Teams, Outlook, Word), multiple open browser tabs/devices, or shared office IPs. Fix: Close everything that might be requesting North Data pages, wait at least 30 minutes, then try again.
What triggers the 429 message?
Our protection systems limit requests (“rate limiting”) to prevent abuse and automated scraping. Common triggers include:
- Parallel access: Multiple browser tabs/windows or multiple devices accessing North Data at the same time.
- Background calls from programs: Tools like Excel, Teams, Outlook, Word can automatically “ping” embedded or saved links without you clicking them.
- Shared IP addresses: In office networks, several people/devices access North Data under the same public IP at once.
- Browser extensions: Add-ons that preload/refresh pages (e.g., Auto-Refresh, Preload tools, SEO crawlers).
- Automated access: Scripts/bots are against our Terms and are blocked.
- Subscription usage on too many devices: Subscribers can use max. two devices at the same time.
Note: Once the block is triggered, it will remain active for about 30 minutes (“cool-down” period).
Step-by-step: How to fix the problem
- Close all North Data tabs – including on other devices (PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone).
- Check programs that might be opening links in the background (Excel, Teams, Outlook, Word, etc.) and remove embedded North Data URLs or close those files.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions (Auto-Refresh, Preload, Crawler tools).
- Log out from other devices or reduce to max. two devices.
- Wait 30 minutes before trying again.
- If possible, use Incognito/Private mode and only one tab.
How to avoid it in the future
- Don’t keep multiple tabs/windows with North Data open.
- Avoid auto-refreshing add-ons.
- Remove embedded North Data links from Office documents/emails when not in use.
- In team environments, make sure no more than two devices use the subscription at the same time.
- For high-volume usage, consider a Team package.
Special case: Payment/Checkout & 429
If the 429 block is triggered during payment, the payment may fail.
Steps:
- Follow the fix instructions above.
- Retry payment after the cool-down period.
- Make sure your bank’s 3-D Secure/App/TAN approval is successfully confirmed.
