# How are employee numbers determined?

## An overview of how employee numbers are determined from annual financial statements.

The employee numbers displayed in the bar chart, and the table of financial key performance indicators are determined by a textual analysis of the annual financial statements.

Annual financial statements often include the number of employees in the running text. For example, the text "*The company had an average of 77 employees in the reporting year (previous year: 55),"*  is analysed by our algorithms, which automatically identifies the number of employees.

Since determining the number of employees is notoriously unreliable, the employee number is marked as ["uncertain"](https://help.northdata.com/en/center/what-does-the-remark-indirect-or-uncertain-method-of-determination-mean-when-referring-to-financial-parameters?hsLang=en) and it is only available to our Premium Users.

**Tip:** In case of doubt, the employee number can be checked quickly and easily by clicking on the source, which indicates the source text used.
