Is beneficial owner registration mandatory in Sweden?

Learn who must register beneficial ownership in Sweden, how the registration process works, and which entities are exempt.

Yes. Beneficial owner registration is mandatory for most companies and legal entities in Sweden.

Under Swedish anti-money laundering legislation, most companies, associations, and other legal entities must register their beneficial ownership information with Bolagsverket. Newly registered entities must complete the registration within four weeks from the registration date.

What is a Beneficial Owner?

A beneficial owner is a natural person who ultimately owns or controls a company or on whose behalf business activities are conducted.

Why is registration required?

The register was introduced following the EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive (2015) to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. It enables banks and authorities to identify individuals who exercise significant control over companies.

How does registration work?

Registration must be completed online through Bolagsverket’s e-service:

  • Fee: SEK 250 (approx. EUR 22–23)

  • Filed by an authorised signatory

  • Signed using Swedish e-identification (e.g., Mobile BankID)

  • The e-service is available in Swedish only

Who is exempt?

Certain entities, such as sole traders, simple partnerships, listed companies, and public authorities, are exempt from the requirement.
