How Does Company Registration Work in Ireland?
An overview of company registration requirements, processing times, and registration costs in Ireland.
Where to Register?
In Ireland, businesses are registered with the Companies Registration Office (CRO).
The CRO is the central public registry for:
- Companies
- Business names
- Limited partnerships
It operates under the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment.
Note: The CRO is also responsible for registering Irish branches of foreign (external) companies.
Is Registration Mandatory for All Businesses?
Registration requirements in Ireland depend on the legal form of the business.
Some business structures only require tax registration, while others must be formally registered with the CRO before they can legally operate.
Registration Requirements for "Sole traders"
CRO registration is not required for sole traders.
However, you must:
- Register for tax with Revenue
- Register a business name with the CRO if you operate under a name different from your personal name
Note: A business name is any trading name that differs from the individual’s or entity’s legal name.
Registration is mandatory if such a name is used.
